South Africa NOC Confirms Reddy Harassment Investigation

(ATR) Chief executive of the South Africa Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC), Tubby Reddy, has 30 days to mull over the alleged misconduct that resulted in his suspension.

SASCOC confirmed in a statement that the suspension is due to a sexual harassment claim against Reddy by a fellow staff member who says Reddy used his influence in the organization to make odd requests, including shoulder massages and responses to inappropriate emails. The employee aired her grievances in an official complaint on April 21.

Reports suggest that the complaint resulted in Reddy seeking an internal review of office practices. Suspicions and accusations of wire tapping and hoax emails have followed since the initial complaint, leading to a SASCOC EB meeting on July 19 in Johannesburg.

The circus created by the situation led the EB to suspend Reddy for 30 days beginning on July 20. Despite the suspension, the SASCOC chief executive will still receive his normal paycheck.

Reddy’s suspension ends on Aug. 18, a time frame that SASCOC says provides enough time for the external, independent firm investigating the situation to conduct its review.

Reddy was instrumental in helping Durban, South Africa earn the right to host the 2022 Commonwealth Games. However, delays in the formation of an organizing committee and lack of payments to the Commonwealth Games Federation led to the city being stripped of its hosting rights.
