One of the main heroes of the Sochi Olympics, short-track speedskating star Viktor Ahn, said Friday he is not looking past this year in terms of his career plans.
Ahn won the 500m and 1,000m individual titles before leading the Russian team to relay gold in Sochi last month to become the sport’s all-time most decorated athlete as a six-time Olympic champion.
"It’s not important for me to give any promises now. It’s important to do well this year and then see whether I’m able to compete for another year," Ahn said.
On Friday, the 28-year-old received an extra medal embedded with meteorite fragments that fell neat the Russian city of Chelyabinsk on February 15, 2013.
Ahn won three Olympic titles as a competitor for his native South Korea, where he was known as Ahn Hyun-Soo, adding them to 20 world championship gold medals.
After reportedly falling out with Korean coaches he switched allegiances to Russia in 2011, getting citizenship in 2012 and switching his first name to Viktor for its triumphant meaning.
