World champions in marathon canoe 2023 will be crowned in Denmark. Today, Denmark was awarded the ICF 2023 Canoe Marathon World Championships. Denmark was up against strong competitors from Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, and China.

The Danish bid referenced a strong Viking theme. For centuries, Vikings have been the warriors of the water, crossing new frontiers and achieving greatness. In Denmark, the bravest and noble victors came from the beautiful village of Jels, and in 2023 this Viking village will inspire a new generation of champions!

By combining tradition, innovation and partnerships the 2023 ICF Canoe Marathon World Championships in Denmark will bring canoe marathon to a new level by offering a once in a lifetime integrated experience for athletes, fans and ICF family. Join the Vikings as we bring past legacies to the future!

- We are incredibly pleased that ICF 2023 Canoe Marathon World Championships is coming to Denmark. In Denmark, we have a long and proud marathon tradition, and we are one of the nations that have created and shaped the canoe marathon. It will be a celebration of that tradition. The World Championships also becomes a celebration of our talented athletes.

- The World Championships is an opportunity for the Danish Canoe Federation to show responsibility. Responsibility for developing the sport, responsibility for displaying the sport, responsibility for staging sports competitions in a sustainable and environmentally friendly manner.

- When we attract the ICF Canoe Marathon World Championships to Denmark, it is a continuation of our successful event strategy. The success is due to reliable and competent partners in Sport Event Denmark, the Triangle Region and the Municipality of Vejen. We will benefit from this when we use the championships to promote the sport in the broadest possible sense in the Triangle area, says Ole Tikjøb, president, Danish Canoe Federation.

Behind the Danish bid is a strong collaboration between the Triangle Area Denmark, the Danish Canoe Federation (DKF) and Sport Event Denmark.

The Triangle Region has more events in the pipeline: In 2020, the World Urban Orienteering Championships 2020 will be staged in Kolding, Vejle, and Fredericia. In 2021, the Tour de France Grand Depart will visit the city of Vejle, while in 2022 Haderslev will host the UCI Mountainbike Marathon World Championships 2022.
