(ATR) Observers predict a "close race" for secretary general of the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa.
The race pits incumbent Khaled Zein El Din against IOC international cooperation director Tommy Sithole at the ANOCA General Assembly in Abidjan, Cote d'Ivoire on July 12.
Speaking on the basis of anonymity, one insider said the decision comes down to "continuity or getting something new" with Sithole being the fresh voice.
"Khaled knows the job," the insider said. "He’s a man of the system. Tommy is known as an excellent sport administrator."
Another observer said "both candidates are good," saying what is "most important" is for African sport to benefit, the person said, adding that both candidates would deliver.
One person who will not be taking sides, is ANOCA president Lassana Palenfo. He was accused of increasing the number of Arab Olympic officials in his circle to sway votes to the Egyptian Zein El Din at the 2009 General Assembly. To avoid anyappearance of favoritism, Palenfo officially declared himself neutral this time around.
The other contested race is between Nigerian IOC member Habu Gumel and Negroes Malealea Kgosietsile, president of the Botswana National Olympic Committee. Gumel is expected to win that race easily.
