Marisol Casado, president of the International Triathlon union, announced her vision for the future of triathlon in the Olympics at an ITU event in Yokohama Saturday.
"Looking ahead, the ITU remains committed and passionate about seeing triathlon mixed relay added to the Olympic sports program, and we are keen to promote it in the context of Agenda 2020," Casado said at a press conference in Yokohama.
Casado outlined the federation's growth strategy that includes promoted mixed triathlon relays for Olympic inclusion, the development of Paratriathlon, and Rio 2016 developments.
In Rio, the triathlon events will take place in part at the Copacabana Beach, which Casado called "the perfect setting" to showcase the sport.
"The ITU is also extremely proud that Paratriathlon will make its debut at the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games, offering an inclusive global opportunity for athletes to perform at elite level in a modern and dynamic sport," Casado added.
"I believe on this evidence that Paratriathlon has the potential to become one of the fastest-growing sports in the Paralympic Movement."
