ICF President Secures ASOIF Position

The International Canoe Federation President, José Perurena Lopez (ESP) has been elected as member of the Association of Summer Olympic International Federations (ASOIF) at the SportAccord Convention held in Sochi, Russia.

The International Canoe Federation President, José Perurena Lopez (ESP) has been elected as member of the Association of Summer Olympic International Federations (ASOIF) at the SportAccord Convention held in Sochi, Russia.

The role of ASOIF is to unite, promote and support the International Summer Olympic Federations; to preserve their autonomy, while co-ordinating their common interests and goals. It also serves and represents the Summer Olympic International Federations in the most competent, articulate and professional manner on issues of common interest in the Summer Olympic Games and the Olympic Movement, and on any other matter deemed necessary by the IFs.

The SportAccord Convention is the world's premier annual event at the service of sport, focused on driving positive change internationally, and dedicated to engaging rights holders, organising committees, cities, businesses and other organisations in the development of sport.

Biography

Perurena competed at the 1968 Olympics as a canoeist in the K4 event. He was a Spanish national champion several times in kayak and competed internationally for many years. A computer technician, he later became director of the IT Department at Saint-Gobain in Spain.

In sports administration Perurena was Chairman of the Athletes’ Commission of the Spanish Olympic Committee (1992-94), and has been a member of the Spanish Olympic Committee since 1984, serving as Vice-President from 1987-2001.

With the Spanish Canoe Federation he was Vice-President (1988-2000), Secretary General (2000-04), 1st Vice-President (2005-08), and then President. He then became President of the International Canoe Federation in 2008 and is now in his second term following a successful re-eleaction in 2012.

In 2011 he became a Member of the IOC and has served on the Women and Sport Commission (2012-14), the Entourage Commission (appointed 2014), and the Olympic Programme Commission (appointed 2014).

Perurena was also elected as the President of the International World Games Association in 2014.
