USA Women hoopsters continue to set records at 2022 FIBA Women’s World Cup

Just a day after an historic 145-69 blowout victory over Korea which set an all-time FIBA scoring record, Team USA reached another team milestone - a 27 game unbeaten streak.

The 121-59 Group A victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina wrapped up preliminary round play at the 2022 FIBA Women’s World Cup.

The USA will now face Serbia in the quarterfinals on Thursday. The U.S. is 1-0 against Serbia, having won a 2014 group phase game 94-74 in Istanbul, Turkey.

It was a national record-setting 27th World Cup win in a row for the Americans, surpassing the previous record of 26 set from 1994-2006.

The 27-game streak is also the second longest in FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup history, only bested by the Soviet Union’s 56 consecutive victories.

Team USA has not lost a World Cup game in the past nine tournaments, as they seek their fourth consecutive World Cup and 11th overall title.

As three-time reigning World Cup champions, the U.S. advanced to the quarterfinals following wins over Belgium (87-72), Puerto Rico (106-42), China (77-63), Korea (145-65), and Bosnia and Herzegovina (121-59).

The defense has been the story so far throughout the tournament and just fits the “relentless” attribute this team embodies, according to Alyssa Thomas.

“I think we just go out there and play our game each and every night,” said Thomas. “I’m not so worried about the score and am just really focused on us and getting better each and every game.”

“It’s phenomenal to see how many people (know) how talented we are,” said Kelsey Plum, who scored 20 points on 8-of-11 shooting. “I mean, just one through twelve you know. Just talk about Shakira Austin. I mean, shoot, coming in and wreaking havoc on people. Brionna Jones, I mean, to be able to have those people come off your bench. And then not to minus, you got MVPs and defensive players of the year and world class players, baby ‘Bron over here (Alyssa Thomas). It’s just been a lot of fun.”

The USA v Serbia quarterfinal match up will be on Thursday at noon Sydney time/Wednesday at 10 p.m. EST.
