OCA Press Release: Eleven NOCs to battle for e-sports honours at Ashgabat 2017

Kuwait, August 17, 2017: A total of 77 video gamers from 11 National Olympic Committees will compete in the finals of the e-sports competition at the Olympic Council of Asia’s 5th Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games (AIMAG) in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan next month.

E-sports has been included as a demonstration sport, meaning the medals will not be counted in the overall medal standings alongside the 21 official sports.

There will be four e-sports events in the programme:

*Dota 2 (Defence of the Ancients - Multiplayer Online Battle Arena - MOBA)

*Hearthstone (fast-paced strategy card game)

*StarCraft II (RTS – Real-Time Strategy)

*The King of Fighters XIV

The e-sports finals will be held over three days, from September 25-27, and follows a series of regional qualifying competitions from August 11-13.

The 11 countries and regions to compete in Ashgabat are: China, Chinese Taipei, Laos, Vietnam, Philippines, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, Iran, Jordan, Pakistan and the host Turkmenistan.

E-sports featured with six events in the 4th AIMAG at Incheon, Korea, in 2013 and proved to be very popular among the spectators, who packed into the competition arena and cheered every move of the experts.

The League of Legends battle between Korea and China proved to be particularly attractive, especially with the home supporters as Korea took the gold medal.

The e-sports event at Ashgabat 2017 will be organised by the 5th Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games Organising Committee and the Asian E-sports Federation, with technical support provided by Alisports and Duo Sport Group.

Ashgabat 2017 runs from September 17-27.
