Team USA closes successful showing at UCI Para-cycling Track World Championships

U.S. finishes with four medals, three world titles and world record in Montichiari

Competition at the 2016 UCI Para-cycling Track World Championships came to a close on Sunday as Team USA took home four medals (three gold and one bronze), crowning two world champions and breaking a world record in Montichiari.

"I am proud of our athletes, who collectively were consistent top-eight finishers, led by our medal winners who collectively brought home four medals, three world titles, and a world record," Ian Lawless, high performance director of U.S. Paralympics Cycling said. "I’m pleased with the team's momentum as we enter our preparation phase for the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games."

Team USA came close to adding another medal on the final day of competition as Joe Berenyi (Oswego, Illinois), Jennifer Schuble (Birmingham, Alabama) and Chris Murphy (Alta Loma, California) combined for a fourth place finish in the C1-5 mixed team sprint. The trio was less than six-tenths of a second from the podium behind the bronze medal team from Spain. Great Britain set the world record en route to gold as China took silver.

"Worlds was a learning experience that I still have a lot of work to do on the road to Rio," Schuble said. "Every country is bringing new strengths, but that’s what keeps it interesting…We came so close to medal in the team sprint and were getting it together better with each run. If we keep that mentality into Rio, we will be on the podium."

Berenyi found early success in Montichiari, leading the U.S. to two world titles in the first two days in the men’s C3 individual 3-kilometer pursuit and 1km time trial. Shawn Morelli (Leavenworth, Kansas) came away with her first track world title in record-breaking style, setting the world best in the women’s C4 3km pursuit. Rounding out Team USA’s medal collection was Jamie Whitmore (Mount Aukum, California) who captured bronze in the women’s C3 500-meter time trial.

Team USA will transition to the road with the first UCI Para-cycling Road World Cup in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa, May 2-9, ahead of the Paralympic Games in September.
