Fresnillo remains the most insecure city in the whole country, according to the perception of 97.1% of citizens surveyed by the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi), in the midst of the drug war that has not stopped in Zacatecas.
Although the increase was brief, compared to the National Urban Public Security Survey (ENSU) for the fourth quarter of 2021, when the figure was 96.8%, during the first three months of 2022 the inhabitants stated that the municipality remains just as unsafe.
Saul Monreal, mayor of Fresnillo, attributed that the perception is due to high-impact crimes, but in particular, to the murders recorded by the fierce struggle of drug cartels. Hence, it was urgent to rethink the strategy to the federal government.
At least since mid-2020, the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) against the Sinaloa Cartel has shown its territorial disputes in the region. From then on, the spike in intentional homicides began in Zacatecas, crucial for transport routes from the center and Pacific of the country to the northern border.
According to data from Inegi, in the third quarter of 2021 there was a perception of insecurity of 94.3% in Fresnillo, by December last year that index increased to 96.9 percent. However, expectations had already exceeded 90% since six months earlier.
