Puerto Rico will boost its agriculture at Alimentaria 2022 fair in Barcelona

San Juan, 18 Mar The Department of Agriculture of Puerto Rico announced this Friday that it will participate for the first time in the Alimentaria 2022 fair, to be held in Barcelona (Spain) from April 4 to 7, where it will present twelve products from Puerto Rican companies. At this international fair, the government agency and several local companies will promote agriculture in Puerto Rico and showcase products such as coffee, pineapple or papaya. The event will make it possible to publicize purely Puerto Rican products internationally and create alliances that allow exports, according to the Minister of Agriculture, Ramón González, explained in a statement. This fair has the participation of nearly 3,000 Spanish companies and 400 international companies from 52 countries. “We are ready to present abroad a sample of our Puerto Rican cuisine, which is undoubtedly exquisite. This convention represents an opportunity to create new markets for our agrientrepreneurs and coffee growers,” Gonzalez said. “Our goal is that they can expand their businesses to other countries. At the same time, they will have the opportunity to learn how agricultural businesses are being managed with so many changes taking place globally,” added the Minister of Agriculture. Coffee companies with large-scale export capabilities that will be marketing in Spain are Hacienda San Pedro, Café 787, Café Oro and Hacienda Alto Grande, LLC under the Alto Grande, Yauco Selecto and Yaucono brands. On the other hand, agronomist Joel Vega, from the newly created Marketing Cooperative in Santa Isabel, G8-COOP, will attend with some of the fruits that are produced on the premises, such as melon and pineapple. Go Mango Puerto Rico is another company that will participate in promoting papaya and various varieties of mango, while the first agricultural distillery to produce cane rum, San Juan Artisan Distillers, will present Tres Clavos Rum and Pepón Rum. “It is necessary to continue to expose the island's agriculture in new spaces, in order to position Puerto Rico as an ideal place for export. Our geographical composition allows us to harvest a wide variety of products throughout the year,” González said. The Minister of Agriculture said that “agricultural production will increase” on the island, something necessary for both export and local trade, because Puerto Rico currently imports 85% of what it consumes.
