Alonso is grateful, unharmed in a car accident

PORT ST. LUCIE, Florida, USA (AP) — New York Mets first baseman Pete Alonso said he was unharmed after his car rolled over in an accident on Sunday in Tampa.

The stellar slugger said that his wife, Haley, was in another vehicle behind and that he notified the authorities.

“It's really special for me to be here,” Alonso acknowledged on Monday. “It's a special spring training because yesterday I was close to death. My car probably rolled over three times, a person ran the red light and hit me. I'm really grateful to be alive. I am grateful that I am healthy and I am grateful to be here.”

Alonso was on his way to camp with the Mets when the accident happened.

“One moment I come here to work, to spring camp and the next I'm hitting my windshield and trying to get out of an overturned car. Then really blessed to be here. Grateful that nothing went wrong. Also thanks to Ford for having great engineering,” he said.

The accident occurred at 6:30 p.m. According to Tampa police, the other driver received a summons for breaking the red light and the crash is still under investigation.

Also, Mets ace Jacob DeGrom said he intends to opt out of his contract and become a free agent after the season. This will give up 30.5 million dollars of salary by 2023, including 12 million deferred and that is part of an agreement an equipment option for 2024 of 32.5 million, of which 15 million are deferred.

The 33-year-old, two-time right-hander Cy Young, intends to stay with the Mets.
