(ATR) The organizers of the 2018 Olympics tell Around the Rings the plan for a new ceremony stadium is not news.
On Thursday, the South Korean culture ministry met with officials from PyeongChang to discuss possibly moving the ceremony venue to Gangeung. The coastal city is much larger than PyeongChang and the site of ice events for the Olympics. "Economic reasons" was the given explanation for why the move was being considered.
Instead, all groups decided the venue would remain in Hoenggae, some two kilometers from the Alpensia Resort, the main hub of the 2018 Winter Olympics.
"Our Opening and Closing Ceremony venue will be in Hoenggae, as determined in July 2012," a POCOG spokesperson said in an email.
"With the reconfirmation of this venue, we will continue to move forward in order to make preparations on time and assure a wonderful experience to all those that will be a part of the 2018 Games."
The bid book originally proposed the ski jumping stadium for the opening and closing ceremony venue. However, the venue was changed in 2012 to ensure easier access to the venue.
"The adjustments are inevitable in order to deliver the athlete- and Games-oriented concept that we had promised in the bid," said then-POCOG president Jin Sun Kim explaining the move.
