The Nikkei 225 index on the Tokyo stock exchange closed on Wednesday up 3%, following gains in the United States and supported by a cheaper yen.

Nikkei rose 3.0% or 816.05 points to 28,040.16, while the broader Topix index rose 2.33% or 44.96 points to 1,978.70.
