(ATR) Turkish IOC member Ugur Erdener tells Around the Rings that Istanbul is considering bidding for the Olympics for a sixth time.

The Turkish Olympic Committee is awaiting the outcomes of the Olympic Agenda 2020 discussions in Monaco next month before it evaluates a possible bid for the 2024 Olympics.

"A decision as to whether Istanbul should bid for the 2024 Olympic Games will be taken over the next few months after meetings between the TOC and the president and the prime minister of Turkey," Erdener told ATR.

"Until such meetings have taken place, it would not be appropriate to speculate further and the TOC will be making no further comment," added the IOC's medical commission chairman.

With this timetable in mind, Istanbul appears to be languishing behind other potential bids for the 2024 Games.

The U.S. Olympic Committee will announce its candidate city in January, while the German NOC has said it will put forward Berlin or Hamburg for a 2024 bid. The French Olympic Committee is moving ahead with its Paris 2024 bid plans, despite lack of support from the city’s mayor. Rome is also mulling a bid.

But the TOC has indicated to ATR that the question of another Olympic bid is a "delicate issue" – Turkey has failed with five previous bids – and it will not be rushed into a decision.

Tokyo defeated Istanbul 60-36 in the final round of voting to secure the 2020 Games at the IOC Session in Buenos Aires last September.

Bidding for the 2024 Olympics will begin in the second half of 2015 when the IOC invites expressions of interest from the world’s NOCs.

The IOC will vote on the host city in 2017.
