(ATR) Residents of Japan can register for a TOKYO 2020 ID, the first step in entering the first lottery for 2020 Olympics tickets.
An online Japanese portal has been launched by Tokyo 2020, beginning the first step in the domestic ticket program, and can be found here. An English language portal for Japan residents is being developed, organizers say.
After registering for a TOKYO 2020 ID, Olympic fans will be able to sign up for the first phase ticket lottery in Spring 2019. Once the lottery is completed, those chosen will be able to purchase their tickets online, although delivery of the tickets will not happen until May 2020.
The total number of Tokyo 2020 tickets to be made available has so far not been revealed, although organizers estimate that Tokyo will sell similar number of tickets to London 2012, which sold around 11 million.
"The lottery system aims to give as many people as possible a chance to purchase tickets for the event of their choice," Tokyo 2020 said in a release.
"After registering and obtaining their TOKYO 2020 ID, people will be able to apply for tickets during the lottery phase. Should their application be unsuccessful, they will still be able to buy tickets during the first-come, first-served phase."
Following the online lottery, a first-come, first served process will begin for the rest of domestic Tokyo 2020 tickets in Fall 2019. Domestic box offices will open in Spring 2020.
Tokyo 2020 says that a full list of authorized ticket resellers, which handle the sales for all tickets outside of Japan, will be published in spring 2019. Each of the world’s National Olympic Committee has an authorized ticket reseller, although some resellers began posting hospitality packages months before authorized to do so by Tokyo 2020.
More than 1.2 million people have already signed up for a TOKYO 2020 ID, according to organizers.
