Golden 25: #19 -- Paralympics Leader Andrew Parsons

(ATR) Paralympic sport and sponsorship profiles are on the rise.

(ATR) The Paralympics appear to be on solid ground as Andrew Parsons heads into his second year as International Paralympics Committee president. Parsons was elected to the IOC in 2018 and serves on the CoComm for Tokyo 2020 and is a member of the board of the Olympic Channel.

The Brazilian sports leader, who watched as calamity was narrowly avoided with the Rio 2016 Paralympics, can look ahead to better organized and properly funded games coming from Tokyo, Paris and Los Angeles.

With Executive Director Xavier Gonzalez leading the way with the various organizing committees, the Paralympics have become well integrated into the overall planning for the Olympics. Media chief Craig Spence is an accessible source for press covering Paralympic issues.

Keeping the Paralympics a manageable event is one of the challenges facing the IPC. There’s a push from a number of sports to join the program. Sailing, rejected for Tokyo, is now aiming to rejoin the program for Paris.

Mainline Olympic sponsors such as Toyota are including Paralympics as part of their activation. Broadcasters worldwide, as well as the Olympic Channel and other digital sources are opening new access points for sports fans to follow Paralympic sport. In PyeongChang the Olympic Channel delivered 300 hours of coverage last March.

The Around the Rings Golden 25 is the annual survey of individuals who will have the most influence for the Olympic Movement in the year ahead. First published in 1997, this is the 22nd edition.
