FIS Alpine FEC & President Cup Hits the Slopes of PyeongChang

A busy season of test events gets underway.

The 2017 season of PyeongChang test events kicked off this week with the FIS Alpine Far East Cup & President Cup taking to the slopes of the YongPyong Alpine competition venue.

With the hype around the 2018 Winter Olympic Games reaching new heights with just over a year to go, the event attracted record entries this year with athletes all eager to test out the slopes before they take to the main stage next February. A total of 151 athletes took part over the two days from 16 countries and 15 of them were in the world’s top 75 rankings.

The first day of action featured the Slalom Run. Emi HASEGAWA (Japan, 1:54.63) took first place in Ladies’ Slalom followed by Emiko KIYOSAWA (Japan, 1:56.80) as second place and Ekaterina TKACHENKO (Russia, 1:57.23) in third. Ryunosuke OHKOSHI (Japan, 1:41.43) finished at first place in Men’s Slalom followed by Zan GROSELJ (Slovenia, 1:42.04) as second place and Aleksander ANDRIENKO (Russia, 1:42.95) in third.

Day two was the turn of the Giant Slalom where Alexandra TILLEY (Great Britain, 2:02.56), Asa ANDO (Japan, 2:05.90), and Miki ISHIBASHI (Japan, 2:07.75) won the gold, silver, and bronze medal respectively in the ladies division. Zan KRANJEC (Slovenia, 2:00.17) won a gold medal in Men’s Giant Slalom followed by Pavel TRIKHICHEV (Russia, 2:00.53) winning silver and Ryunosuke OHKOSHI (Japan, 2:02.00) taking a bronze medal home.

Known as the ‘rainbow slopes’ of the YongPyong Resort, the venue was completed back in 1998 and has hosted four FIS Alpine World Cup Games since. For the Olympic Winter Games, the venue will be home to the Alpine Skiing Slalom and Giant Slalom events and will have the capacity for up to 6,000 spectators to create a wonderful atmosphere for the athletes next year.

The winter sports action continues in February with the FIS Cross-Country World Cup kicking off a jam-packed month of excitement and entertainment across the PyeongChang venues.
