The Executive Committee of the European Olympic Committees (EOC), which met virtually today, stands in solidarity with the International Olympic Committee (IOC), UEFA, and other proponents of the European Sports Model in condemning the recent proposal by leading European football clubs to create a new European Super League.
As IOC President Thomas Bach correctly stated today, the purely profit-oriented goals of commercial sport providers and investors completely ignore the intrinsic values and the social mission of sport. If lost, this would have catastrophic consequences for the structures that underpin sport in Europe.
"The EOC vows to work proactively with all members of the Olympic Movement, UEFA, FIFA, likeminded governments and other stakeholders to safeguard the social mission of sport, to promote its values, and to continue to place sport at the service of society," said EOC Acting President Niels Nygaard.
