(ATR) IOC President Thomas Bach says the Pan Am Games could help a Toronto bid for the Games.
"I think Toronto could be a good candidate [for the 2024 games] but we still have to see now the Pan Am Games, how it's working here. The Pan Am Games can give a boost to a [Olympic] candidate," he said in an interview on CBC in Toronto where he is attending the open of the 2015 edition of the Pan Ams.
Given Toronto’s investment in new venues for the Pan American Games, Toronto could create a bid plan for a future Olympics that would emphasize using the facilities built for the Pan Ams.
On Monday, Toronto Mayor John Tory was also questioned about Toronto’s interest in hosting the Olympics in an interview with CBC. Tory said he is more focused on the present.
If Toronto were to enter the race for 2024, it would join Boston, Paris, Rome, Hamburg and Budapest as potential suitors.
Toronto previously bid for the 1996 and 2008 Olympics, losing out to Atlanta and Beijing.
Canada has hosted three prior Olympics: the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, the 1988 Calgary Winter Games and the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver.
