(ATR) Many changes are needed at the International Weightlifting Federation acting president Ursula Papandrea tells Around the Rings.

Papandrea was named acting president in January when the federation was the subject of a documentary by ARD TV in Germany. The program depicted a federation with questionable financial dealings and a chronic doping problem.

In March Papandrea took firm control of the IWF when long time president Tamas Ajan resigned. The move cleared the way for her and colleagues to chart a new course for the federation.

That includes a possibly damaging report from Canadian investigator Richard McLaren on the operations of the IWF under Ajan’s leadership. That report is due in June. Papandrea says wide-ranging changes are needed, regardless of the findings of the McLaren report.

Besides governance and doping, Papandrea says the presentation of the sport in competition needs to be modernized. And the headquarters will move from Budapest to Lausanne.

She spoke with ATR Editor Ed Hula from her home in Texas April 29.
