ALIBABA AND THE OLYMPIC GAMES: FACT SHEET
Celebrating Two Years of Partnership
On January 19, 2017, Alibaba and the IOC signed a landmark, long-term partnership through 2028. As a
TOP partner, Alibaba became the official "Cloud Infrastructure and Services" and "E-Commerce
Platform" Partner of the IOC, as well as a Founding Partner of the Olympic Channel.
Through the partnership, Alibaba brings the power of its innovations across e-commerce, cloud services
and digital media platforms to help the IOC and the Olympic Movement achieve their vision of
transforming the Games in a new digital era. This includes creating a more connected, engaging, secure
and efficient Olympic Games experience for all members of the Olympic Family and the millions of fans
around the world.
Alibaba-IOC Partnership Milestones
Alibaba at the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Winter Games
The Alibaba Olympic Games Showcase at PyeongChang 2018 offered fans, media and the Olympic
Family the opportunity to see first-hand how Alibaba technology will transform future Olympic Games.
The showcase provided fully immersive, interactive and future-looking experiences that brought to life
Alibaba’s vision and the potential impact of Alibaba’s cloud services and e-commerce platforms at future
Games. More than 100,000 attendees visited the showcase throughout the Games.
Alibaba also introduced the Alibaba Cloud ET Sports Brain, a suite of cloud-based and AI-powered
solutions that will further drive the digital transformation of the Olympic Games by enhancing the
Games experience for fans, facilitating smarter planning for host cities, increasing safety and security,
improving training efficiency for athletes and expanding reach and accessibility of Olympic Games related content.
Looking Ahead to Tokyo 2020 & Beijing 2022
Since its debut at the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic Games, Alibaba has been collaborating with the IOC
and the Olympic Family to introduce a variety of transformative solutions spanning cloud services and ecommerce that will positively impact the Games in the future.
• Cloud Data Center for Beijing 2022 (June 2018): Alibaba Cloud will use its Cloud Infrastructure and
Services to help BOCOG deliver a green, inclusive, open and clean Olympic Winter Games.
• OBS Cloud (September 2018): Alibaba Cloud, the cloud computing arm of Alibaba Group, partnered
with Olympic Broadcasting Services (OBS) to launch the OBS Cloud – a ground-breaking broadcasting
platform that operates entirely on the cloud. Set to be in place for Tokyo 2020, the OBS Cloud will
help transform and digitize how Rights Holding Broadcasters (RHBs) cover the Olympic Games.
Leveraging Alibaba Cloud’s technology infrastructure, the solution is designed to support the
demanding content production and delivery workflows associated with broadcasting the Games.
The platform was successfully tested at the 2018 Summer Youth Olympic Games in Argentina in
October, and Alibaba and OBS will continue to enhance the OBS Cloud solution for deployment at
upcoming Games.
• Olympic Store on Tmall (December 2018): Alibaba and the IOC launched the first-ever Olympic
online store on Tmall for Chinese fans to celebrate the heritage of the Games and join the excitement for Tokyo 2020 and Beijing 2022 all year round. From the Olympic store on Tmall, fans in
China can purchase Tokyo 2020 and Beijing 2022 branded products (part of the Olympic Games
Collection), such as pins, apparel and memorabilia, items from the Olympic Heritage Collection
including postcards of historical Olympic posters and Olympic branded products such as sports
equipment and toys from the Olympic Collection. The Olympic store on Tmall is initially available to
Chinese fans on Alibaba’s Tmall with additional plans in development to create a global ecommerce
platform for fans around the world.
• 3D Athlete Tracking (January 2019): Alibaba and Intel jointly announced plans to develop the first ever, AI-powered 3D athlete tracking technology for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games and beyond.
Powered by Alibaba’s cloud computing capability as well as Intel’s hardware and deep-learning
algorithms, 3D Athlete Tracking uses AI to analyze videos of an athlete’s biomechanic movements so
coaches can enhance their training and ultimately, competition performance. Beyond the benefits
for athletes, 3D Athlete Tracking is also a game changer to help elevate the at-home viewer
experience. Broadcasters will be able to analyze, dissect and re-examine highlights during instant
replays for example and give fans never before seen insights into how world-class athletes perform.
