Rare chance to conceptualise the Chengdu 2021 Opening and Closing ceremonies!

The Organising Committee (OC) of the Chengdu 2021 FISU World University Games next summer issoliciting creative ideas for the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the 31st summer edition of theGames. For perhaps the first time ever, the opportunity to conceptualise the Opening and Closingextravaganzas, is open to all, through a worldwide competition.

"Whether you hail from Beijing, Paris, New York City, Sydney, Nairobi or Rio de Janeiro, you can cometo Chengdu and realise your dream," says a spokesperson of the Chengdu 2021 OC. "We sincerelyextend our invitation to you, for participation in this open contest".

Chengdu is a city with a rich 4,500-year history, where centuries ago Marco Polo was amazed by theprosperity and civilisation of the Orient. Chengdu today, is also a youthful city, that embodies thecharacteristics of 'innovation and creativity, elegance and fashion, optimism and inclusiveness'. Thus,the Opening and Closing ceremonies of the Chengdu 2021 Summer FISU World University Games willbe a festival of youth, culture and creativity.

"We do not underestimate your creativity and we will not put shackles on your imagination," continues the spokesperson. "We only hope that the Opening and Closing ceremonies will be remembered asunique carnivals that celebrate youth and vigour. The ceremonies should be trendy and full of energy,filled with the charms of humanity. The stage should witness an artistic expression of scientific andtechnological feats of this generation in all their glory."

Everyone across the world, especially young people, are invited to participate by submitting a ‘CreativeCopywriting’ document before 31 May 2020. The winning submission(s) will get a chance to work witha world-class director for the gala.

I. ABOUT THE COMPETITION

The FISU World University Games are the biggest international multi-sport competition organised foruniversity students by the International University Sports Federation (FISU).

In December 2018, an agreement was signed between the University Sports Federation of China(FUSC), the city of Chengdu and FISU, awarding the 31st FISU Summer World University Games toChengdu. This will be the first world multi-sport event to be held in this western region of China. Thecontest invites entries for the concept of the Opening and Closing ceremonies of the event that is to beheld in August 2021.

II. ABOUT THE CONTENTS

The submission is expected to be in the form of ‘Creative Copywriting’ for the Opening and Closingceremonies of the Summer FISU World University Games. Specifically, this document should includecreative elements of the warm-up performances, cultural performances, as well as the ceremonies ofthe ignition and extinguishment of the Games flame. The venue for the Opening and Closing ceremoniesis tentatively located at the Dong'an Lake Sports Park in Longquanyi District, Chengdu, Sichuan Province.

The stadium is under construction and is to feature 40,000 seats.

III. GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

The submission should demonstrate the features of 'youth, joy and future' of this era. The objective isto design ceremonies that provide a bridge through which worldwide youth may better understandChina. The submission should also focus on the competition principles of 'Sustainable, Smart, Spiritedand Shared' and should generate a unique, one of-a-kind Chengdu memory.

Any individual or organisation interested in this campaign may participate. Applicants' submissiondocuments should include:

i. 'Applicant Introduction' (1000 words).

ii. 'Creative Copywriting' - The all-important 'Creative Copywriting' document should mainlybe presented in a textual format, but imagery and videos are allowed asillustrations. Copywriting must be original, not a published piece of work, nor a replication, amendment, edit or reiteration of any existing work. The word limit for the 'Creative

Copywriting' document 5,000 words.

iii. 'Legal Documents'.

IV. EVALUATION

Preliminary evaluation

Application documents that pass the format check will be handed over to the Evaluation Group of theOpening and Closing Ceremonies Team of Summer World University Games, Chengdu 2021 forpreliminary evaluation. 200 selected candidates' Creative Copywriting works will be given the ShortlistedAward. To show appreciation, authors of the 200 creative works will be given a set of admissiontickets to the main tourist attractions in Chengdu as a welcome gift from Chengdu 2021.

Phase two evaluation

Application documents that pass the format check will be handed over to the Evaluation Group of theOpening and Closing Ceremonies Team of Summer World University Games, Chengdu 2021 for phasetwo evaluation. 20 distinguished Creative Copywriting works will be given the Outstanding Award. Theywill receive a certificate of honour and a 'Visit Chengdu Gift Pack' which will include round-trip ticketsfor two, five days' stay at a 5-star hotel, two sets of admission tickets to main tourist attractions inChengdu, dedicated transport, two tickets to the Opening Ceremony of the Games and also all the foodyou could possibly try in Chengdu, all paid for!

Final evaluation

The distinguished Creative Copywriting works that qualified for the phase two evaluation will be handedover to a judging panel comprised of experts, from which ten campaigns will be chosen for a Gold Awardwith a cash reward of RMB100,000 to each of the 10 winners. The winners will also be invited guests ofthe Chengdu 2021 FISU World University Games.
