IBU welcomes results of the AIOWF Governance Review

The International Biathlon Union (IBU) today welcomed its improved standing in the AIOWF Governance Review but expressed its ongoing commitment to enhancing its governance at all levels of biathlon.

The third governance review saw the IBU’s score improve by 33% from the previous report and exceed the target score set by the ASOIF Governance Taskforce. This significant improvement reflects the series of major governance reforms the IBU has implemented over the last two years, such as the launch of the new state-of-the-art Constitution and its Integrity Code and Biathlon Integrity Unit. The new Constitution, which is at the forefront of good governance, has drawn praise from international experts and has sent out a message about the IBU’s commitment to integrity, transparency and accountability.

IBU President Olle Dahlin said:

"Improving the IBU’s governance has been a major priority since the IBU Executive Board and I were elected in 2018. Over the last two years we have made significant reforms and improvements and we are proud that this has been recognised by international experts. However, this is not the end of our journey.

"We are determined to lead by example and to ensure that high good governance standards are achieved across our sport; from the IBU through to the National Federations. It is not about ticking boxes but about delivering meaningful improvements that will benefit biathlon and give our athletes, fans and all stakeholders complete trust in our sport."

Improving the IBU’s governance is a major priority of the Target 26 strategic plan, and the federation is working to ensure that enhancements in good governance are implemented at the National Federation (NF) level.

As a result, the IBU recently conducted a series of virtual regional workshops for NFs on the topic of governance. Following the workshop and completion of the NF survey, the IBU has begun work on developing a good governance toolkit for NFs which will include an easy-to-use self-assessment checklist along with best practice guidelines, and tips and examples on policy implementation. The IBU will then conduct a review of the NF constitutions, before developing an upgraded version of the toolkit with additional complementary policy tools.
