(ATR) Sepp Blatter is expected to formally announce his candidacy for a fifth term as FIFA president by the Jan. 29 deadline.
The 78-year-old from Switzerland has emerged battered and bruised following the 2018/2022 World Cup bidding scandals that has left his and FIFA’s reputations in need of repair.
Despite ushering in a wave of reforms over the past four years since the storm over a cash-for-votes bidding scandal, Blatter has badly managed FIFA investigator Michael Garcia’s bidding corruption inquiry and subsequent report. That has further tarnished his leadership credentials and potential rivals are considering challenges at the May 29 presidential election. Excluding UEFA, he has the backing of five of the six confederations to run for another four years.
