Muere en La Habana primer campeón olímpico del boxeo cubano deporte del que depende la Isla para el Top 20 de Juegos Olimpicos

Orlando Martínez ganó la medalla de oro en Munich 72 donde mismo Teófilo Stevenson consiguió el primero de sus tres galardones olímpicos.

La mitad de las medallas de oro de Cuba en Juegos Olímpicos se la debe al boxeo.

La que sería senda exitosa de los boxeadores cubanos en el podio olímpico fue iniciada en Munich 1972 con tres pergaminos dorados al cuello del peso gallo Orlando Martínez, el welter Emilio Correa y el supercompleto Teófilo Stevenson.

Martínez, el primer cubano con una medalla olímpica de oro en el ring , murió este miércoles en La Habana a los 75 años.Padecía la enfermedad de Alzheimer.

Su título en aquella jornada en la ciudad alemana donde el gigante Stevenson empezaba a convertirse en el boxeador más célebre del mundo amateur, tendría otra connotación: Martínez daba a Cuba su primer oro olímpico 68 años después del conseguido por el esgrimista Ramón Fonst en 1904 en los Juegos Olímpicos de San Luis.

En la Isla también se celebraba como el primer lauro olímpico dorado de la revolución de Fidel Castro.

En Munich Martínez logró cinco triunfos antes de coronarse: venció 4-1 a Wing Maung (Birmania), 3-2 a Michael Dowling (Irlanda), 5-0 a Ferry Moniaga (Indonesia), 3-2 a George Turpin (Gran Bretaña) en la semifinal y 5-0 a Alfonso Zamora (México) en la final.

Zamora se convertiría tres años después en campeón mundial profesional de la Asociación Mundial de Boxeo.

Martínez fue olímpico en tres ocasiones: México 1968, Munich 1972 y Montreal 1976.

En México perdió en su debut ante el húngaro Tibor Badari y en Montreal fue eliminado en su segunda presentación 3-2 por el surcoreano Hwang Chul Soon tras haber ganado al venezolano Jovito Rengifo por decisión unánime.

En Montreal Martínez fue miembro de un gran equipo cubano liderado por Stevenson que sólo sería superado por el que muchos consideran la mejor selección que haya presentado Estados Unidos en un torneo olímpico.

La expedición de la Unión Americana estuvo encabezada por hombres que luego fueron campeones del boxeo profesional como Ray Leonard, Howard Davies. los hermanos Michael y Leon Spinks, y Leo Randolph, los cinco , monarcas olímpicos en la ciudad canadiense hace 45 años.

Tres de ellos, “Sugar Ray” Leonard, Davies y Randolph, vencieron a cubanos en la final . A su vez otros tres bajaron del ring con medallas de oro: Jorge Hernández, Angel Herrera y Stevenson con su segundo de los tres títulos olímpicos que lograría en su carrera. En Moscú 80 se convertía en tricampeón olímpico para igualar el record del húngaro Laszlo Papp.

El peso completo cubano, que falleció en 2012 a los 60 años, pudo haber conquistado su cuarto oro olímpico en Los Angeles-1984 pero su país se sumó al boicot liderado por la Unión Soviética en respuesta al ejecutado por Estados Unidos y sus aliados contra los Juegos moscovitas cuatro años atrás.

Numerosos rostros que un año antes se vieron en el podio de los Juegos Panamericanos de México 1975 reaparecieron en el torneo olímpico de Montreal entre ellos el de Orlando Martínez que ganó oro en la capital mexicana al superar al estadounidense Bernard Taylor.

De las 84 medallas de oro ganadas por Cuba en sus 21 participaciones olímpicas, el boxeo ha conquistado casi la mitad , 41, a partir de la presea de oro de Orlando Martínez, y a pesar de las ausencias olímpicas de Los Angeles y Seúl.
