Safety monitoring technology will be deployed for the first time to monitor spectators as Surrey County Cricket Club host Middlesex in their opening match of the Bob Willis Trophy at the Kia Oval on Saturday. British technology company, Restrata, will deploy its COVID SAFE platform in a trial to monitor and manage social distancing, capacity and Track & Trace during the match which will be attended by 2,500 spectators. This follows an initial pilot at the Oval last week with 1,000 spectators which was approved and monitored by the Department of Culture Media & Sport (DCMS).

Restrata recently provided its technology to enable the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) to deliver the first biosecure test series between England and West Indies which was held behind closed doors.

Originally developed to assure safety of people across critical infrastructure from security & safety threats such as terrorism or industrial accidents, Restrata’s Bluetooth technology will be deployed at the KIA Oval to provide a real time monitoring and management capability to control crowd capacity in certain zones of the ground. In the trial, on Saturday and Sunday, a sample of 200 spectators each day will be given the company’s Bluetooth tracking ‘fobs’ so their movement can be monitored in a centralised control room at the KIA Oval. The trial will demonstrate how technology can be deployed to address some of the key challenges of hosting live events attended by large numbers of spectators in particular contact tracing following any suspected outbreak of Covid-19.

Richard Gould, Chief Executive of Surrey CCC, added:

"While is it is hugely exciting to open our doors once again to cricket fans, our priority has to be the safety of everyone visiting and working at the ground. We have been working closely with DCMS and other governing and safety bodies to develop a safe environment for spectators, staff and players and are delighted to have been allowed to extend the Kia Oval trial – under the Government’s guidelines. We are excited to better understand what role technology can play in this process."

Chris St. George, Chairman of Restrata, said:

"I am delighted that Restrata can play such a prominent role in this larger scale pilot. We are doing this on the back of supporting the ECB with the first ever biosecure Test series. I think technology has a crucial role to play in enabling the safe return of supporters, in increasing numbers, to major sports this Summer and into the Autumn, not only cricket but also Premier League Football."

Founded in 2006, Restrata has been a pioneer in smart tech solutions to help multi-nationals safeguard their people, strategic assets &physical infrastructure in some of the most challenging operating environments in the world. The company has provided technology & security design consultancy to some of the world’s biggest sports events and venues including the Nou Camp Nou in Barcelona, the London Olympics 2012 and Al Bayt Stadium in Doha (one of the venues for the 2022 FIFA World Cup).
