More than 50 representatives from the 28 Summer Olympic International Federations (IFs) and thenew sports to be added to the Olympic Programme in 2020, met today at the Olympic Museum inLausanne, Switzerland, to share with ASOIF and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) theirexperience and feedback from the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

Lead by ASOIF and chaired by President Francesco Ricci Bitti, the meeting offered the chance todebrief about opportunities and challenges faced by the IFs in the run-up and during the most recentGames edition, thereby identifying important learnings for the future. A small delegation from Tokyo2020 participated as observers.

Today’s discussions were based on the results of a questionnaire covering various functional areasand filled in by all IFs post Games. The document had been jointly developed by ASOIF and the IOC aspart of the overall debriefing process of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

Speaking on the occasion of today’s gathering, Francesco Ricci Bitti said: "The purpose of today’smeeting was to look at the bigger picture of the Games delivery model and its future shape, notsingle operational issues." He added: "Based on the questionnaire replies, we have developed keyrecommendations which will be incorporated into the new IF Games Engagement model for thepreparation and delivery of future Games editions. Our focus is on the future and on workingtogether in the most efficient way."

During the meeting, Christophe Dubi, IOC Olympic Games Executive Director and Kit McConnell, IOCSports Director, presented highlights of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. Christophe Dubi said during hispresentation: "The sports action we saw in Rio, and viewed by billions of people on their screensaround the world, was just fantastic.

This achievement was only possible with the strong andcompetent support of our International Federations and the IOC would like to thank them for theirimmense efforts. In the spirit of Olympic Agenda 2020 we will work together even closer in thefuture."

Olympic Agenda 2020, the IOC’s strategic roadmap for the Olympic Movement adopted in December 2014, envisages enhancement of the role of the IFs in the planning and delivery of the Olympiccompetitions, including the possibility of transferring technical responsibilities from the OCOGs tothe IFs (recommendation 13). The ultimate goal is to better utilise IF expertise and thereby ensurethe seamless organisation and a reduction of costs for the Olympic Games, for instance when itcomes to venue design and development or the integration of IF workforce into the Olympic GamesOrganising Committee (OCOG).

The outcomes of today’s discussions will also be presented at the IOC’s full Games debrief meeting inTokyo, Japan, end November, to be attended by the ASOIF President and Executive Director.
