(ATR) The construction company responsible for the delivery of the athlete’s village says the project is 85 percent complete.
Ilha Pura is in charge of the thirty-one highrise buildings that must be completed by March when Rio 2016 takes over to prepare the buildings for the Games. The company also said the village will open on time, on July 24, 2016.
"Workers are focusing the final phase on the construction site," Mauricio Cruz, general director of Ilha Pura, said to world media.
"Eighty-five percent of the work has been completed. To make them feel more comfortable, the buildings include wider doors and elevators capable of handling up to two wheelchairs at the same time."
Close to 18,000 athletes will reside in the village, and Ilha Pura said in a release, the buildings have been designed "according to international standards of accessibility." Buildings will feature doors and corridors that can accommodate two wheelchairs, and all barriers to entry have been eliminated.
When Rio 2016 takes over the progress, it will begin installing the furnishings for the Olympic village to prepare for the athletes arrival next year.
