Selfless Olympian Gilmore Junio Awarded with a Commemorative Medal

– "Thanks Gilmore" Crowd-Funding Campaign, Lead by Jacknife Design, Gave Canadian Olympic Fans an Opportunity to Express Appreciation –

TORONTO – At a heart-felt ceremony at King Edward Elementary School in Kitchener, Ontario, selfless Canadian Olympian Gilmore Junio was awarded a one-of-a-kind commemorative medal to honour his personal sacrifice when he gave up his spot in the Men’s 1000m Speed Skating event at the Sochi Olympics to teammate Denny Morrison who went on to capture an Olympic Silver Medal for Canada.

"To know that what Denny and I did resonated with Canadians in a way that they would go out of their way to show their appreciation is super-humbling," said Gilmore Junio, who accepted the commemorative medal from the elementary students who contributed a significant portion of the total funds raised. "A huge thank-you to the people at Jacknife and to all of the people that donated to the project – I think this shows what Canada is all about."

"Gilmore’s story continues to be one of the finest examples of teamwork coming out of the Sochi 2014 Olympic Games," said Marcel Aubut, President, Canadian Olympic Committee. "He is a fierce competitor, an exemplary Olympian and it is a great honour to be able to count him as one of our own."

The idea of developing a crowd-sourced fundraising campaign, came from Toronto-based firm Jacknife Design. Inspired by Gilmore’s selfless act, they were determined to do something special to recognize his incredible sportsmanship, character and the values that make us all proud to be Canadian.

The team at Jacknife thought the best way to honour Gilmore was to give him a commemorative medal of his own, designed by Jacknife, and funded with help from everyday Canadians. The team quickly developed a website, filmed a video, started an Indiegogo site to crowdfund donations for materials costs and launched a social media campaign that raised over $7,500 to cover the costs of producing the medal. Donations poured in from across Canada, including several groups of schoolchildren (like Ms. Rhoda’s class at King Edward Public School in Kitchener, Waterloo where the medal was awarded) and individual donors touched by Gilmore’s act and Jacknife’s inspired and creative idea.

That generosity also spread to the craftspeople that contributed countless hours to the project including Aimée Kennedy, Custom Prototypes, Flash Reproductions, Imperial Engraving, Q Media, Willinsky Design and the Banting Inn who have all donated time, resources and accommodations to help this special project come to fruition.
