PyeongChang Athlete Ambassadors coach South African children in Durban

A team of PyeongChang 2018 Athlete Ambassadors, including reigning Ladies Figure Skating Olympic Champion, Yuna Kim, today visited a local ice rink in Durban, South Africa, and delighted a group of young people by providing coaching lessons on the ice.

One of the young South African skaters was 18-year-old Tamarah Jacobs, who was a member of PyeongChang's 'Dream Programme' – the city's promise to the IOC to help expand interest and participation in winter sports amongst young people across the world. Tamarah Jacobs became a participant of the 'Dream Programme' in 2005 and visited PyeongChang where she was taught how to Figure Skate by South Korean athletes.

Yuna Kim, reigning Ladies Figure Skating Olympic Champion, said: "I'm so thrilled to meet young people in different areas of the world who have a passion for winter sports.

"In this ice rink in Durban, I have seen the spirit of PyeongChang 2018's New Horizons vision come to life. Our bid is about helping spread the wonderful world of winter sports to new areas and inspiring a new generation of passionate winter sports athletes and fans."

Since 2004, the 'Dream Programme' has provided 935 children from 57 countries the opportunity to experience winter sports for the first time. 200 of those children have come from 12 African nations and 29 specifically from South Africa. One participant from Africa went on to become an Olympic athlete at the Vancouver Winter Games last year.
