(ATR) Pyeongchang 2018 organizers are making progress towards a carbon-responsible Olympics.
POCOG published the Green House Gases Inventory Report, an estimate of green house gases to be released during the entire six-year preparation period of the 2018 Winter Games, on March 6.
Using international standards, POCOG estimates that 1.56 million tons of carbon dioxide equivalent will be omitted during the 2018 Games, or roughly 31 percent of greenhouse gases emitted during the Sochi 2014 Games.
Organizers have created a plan to reduce 30 to 40 percent of the total greenhouse gas emissions in 2018 and eliminate offsets completely by 2025.
According to a POCOG release, organizers are reducing greenhouse gases by "providing electricity to venue cities by organizing a wind plant complex; building facilities to utilize geothermal and solar energy in newly constructed venues; expanding the use of eco-friendly cars such as electric cars; and promoting civil participation for green activities."
The document is the first step towards accomplishing the "Green Dream: O2 Plus Winter Games" vision outline for the 2018 Games. If successful, PyeongChang 2018 will be the first carbon responsible Olympic Games, and launch New Horizons for Green Olympics.
POCOG received a "Greenhouse Gases Verification Statement" for its proper estimation process within the report from the Korean Standards Association in late February.
