CAS Sets Date for BOA Hearing

The Court of Arbitration for Sport has set a hearing on March 12 to rule on whether the British Olympic Association's lifetime ban for doping cheats must be scrapped ahead of the London Games.

The BOA has promised to "vigorously defend" its 19-year-old selection policy – which rules out picking athletes who have served punishments for drug violations – on behalf of athletes.

The World Anti-Doping Agency last month declared the BOA the only National Olympic Committee to be non-compliant with its anti-doping code due to the policy.

CAS is expected to deliver its verdict in late March or early April.

BOA chairman Colin Moynihan has said the BOA will fully embrace Dwain Chambers and other convicted drug cheats into Team GB if CAS rules against its long-standing anti-doping bylaw.

The BOA believes it has a good chance of winning at CAS.

"We have full autonomy to decide who we are going to select and we believe that is a very strong position in front of CAS," Moynihan said in a BBC interview last month. "This is not a sanction or double jeopardy, this is a selection policy. The right of team selectors is the basis for a strong appeal."

BOA Adds Two to Olympic Roster

Luke Patience and Stuart Bithell are the 20th and 21st members of Team Great Britian for the 2012 Olympics.

On Monday, the BOA announced that the sailors in the men’s 470 class made the team.

The pair won silver at last month's 2012 sailing world championships in Perth, Australia making them strong medal contenders this year.

"Despite having competed together for a relatively short period of time, Luke and Stuart have quickly risen to the top of their sport," said British chef de mission Andy Hunt.

"They have done so by blending their remarkable talent with an unwavering work ethic and a commitment to excellence that is the hallmark of British sailing, and we are proud to welcome them to Team GB."

South Koreans Begin 2012 Training

Korean Olympic Committee president Y.S. Park says the 2012 Olympics will "once again place South Korean sports at the center of the world."

Park made the announcement as the Korean Olympic team began training for the 2012 Games, now just 200 days away.

The Korean Herald reports that the KOC kicked off the first official training session for 2012 with a ceremony at the National Training Center in Seoul.

Park said his NOC's goal was to send 250 South Koreans to London.

"To this day, 106 athletes have qualified for the Games," he said. "It’s imperative we qualify in as many events as we can."

North Korean Plans

North Korea says it will send athletes in at least seven sports to London.

Sung Hui Kang, an official with the sports ministry, told the Korean Central News Agency that North Koreans had qualified for archery, athletics, football, shooting, table tennis, weightlifting and wrestling. He added North Koreans could also qualify in boxing, diving and judo.

North Koreans won six medals in Beijing, including two gold.

Small Philippine Delegation for London

The chef de mission for the Philippines Olympic team warns of a small delegation heading to London.

"The way it looks, our assessment is that five to six athletes will go to London," said Manny Lopez.

Two athletes from the Philippines have qualified for the Games to date. If only six athletes represent the Southeast Asian country, that would be its smallest Olympic team since Atlanta 1996.
