Alejandro Blanco, the President of the Spanish Olympic Committee (COE) and the Madrid 2020 Bid, has offered his personal congratulations to Spain’s national synchronised swimming team on their success at the 15th FINA World Championships in Barcelona.

Team members Clara Basiana, Paula Klamburg, Alba Cabello and Meritxell Mas celebrated their medal wins with the coaching staff and joined Blanco at the Madrid 2020 stand set up at the surroundings of the Palau Sant Jordi, where the competition is being held.

"These medals have cemented the international status that our synchronised swimming team already enjoys," commented Blanco to the athletes. "Your youthfulness, tenacity and excitement are vital to our Olympic dream. The quality you have shown is a guarantee of the future success of Spanish synchronised swimming, success that we also hope to celebrate in Madrid at the 2020 Games."

Blanco also praised the "wonderful organisation" of the FIFA World Championships and the support the athletes were getting from the crowds, with 8,783 fans attending the Palau on Sunday alone. "It makes me very happy to see the stands full of people cheering on our swimmers," he said.

The synchronised swimming team have claimed seven of the eight medals Spain has so far won at BCN 2013, with Melanie Costa winning the remaining medal, a silver, in yesterday’s women’s 400m freestyle. The synchro girls leave Barcelona with three silvers (in the team technical routine, team free and free combination) and four bronzes (in the duet free and duet technical routine con Ona Carbonell and Marga Crespi, and the solo technical and solo free with Carbonell).
