Media Blitz for Two Years to Go

The July 27 two-year to go mark to the London Olympics shall not pass quietly with organizers and sponsors planning a full day of events.

TV stations in London are preparing for live shots from the Olympic Park to air during the breakfast hours.

The new Javelin train service at St. Pancras will be in operation to jet media visitors from Central London to the Olympic Park later in the day.

Venues for the Games, some approaching completion, will be on display for the media.

Expect London 2012 chair Sebastian Coe, London Mayor Boris Johnson and Olympics Minister Hugh Robertson to be heard from throughout the day along with Olympians.

Honav, pin licensee for London 2012, will produce a pin to commemorate the day.

Worldwide Olympic sponsor Panasonic will conduct a demonstration of its 3-D display technology that evening in Trafalgar Square.

Team Great Britain Collection Hits Stores Next Month

Anglophilic fashionistas take note: Adidas will launch a Team Great Britain collection next month, giving fans a first shot at dressing like their favorite Olympians.

The sporting giant announced Wednesday that designer Stella McCartney will serve as creative director for Great Britain’s 2012 Olympic team, and the forthcoming collection will be her first assignment.

From athletic wear to casual tracksuits to commercial apparel, she will do it all, an unprecedented level of control for a fashion designer at the Olympics.

"It is an amazing, once in a lifetime opportunity to be creative director of Team GB as the hosting nation of the London 2012 Olympic Games," McCartney said in a statement.

Adidas will continue its long-running sponsorship of Team GB, which has sported the familiar stripes since 1984. McCartney will, in turn, continue her relationship with the sporting giant, for whom she has designed gym, running, swimming and tennis wear under the brand Adidas by Stella McCartney since 2004.

Design details for the Olympic kits have yet to emerge, but early indications will come at next month’s launch. The special Team GB lifestyle range will feature both men’s and women’s commercial collections.

London Set To Miss Renewable Energy Target During Games

London 2012 is unlikely to meet its target to obtain 20 percent of its electricity from new local renewable energy sources during the Olympics, theLondon Assembly heard Thursday.

David Stubbs, LOCOG’s Head of Sustainability, told the Assembly's Environment Committee the loss of a wind turbine scheme and a lack of other renewable energy projects in London will make the target tough to reach.

Darren Johnson, chair of the Environment Committee, said in a statement: "London said it would provide the greenest Games ever and although good progress is being made in many areas, it is disappointing that organizers don't expect to meet their renewable energy target."

Stubbs insisted his team would do everything in its power to make the Games as green as possible.

Food and food-contaminated packaging is expected to comprise 40 percent of waste during the Games, but hopes for a new organic waste processing facility in East London have dimmed.

Sean McCarthy, Chairman of the Commission for Sustainable London 2012, said the plant likely won’t be built by summer 2012, another potential obstacle en route to the renewable energy target.
