René Fasel will be the eyes and ears for all the Winter Olympic sports in Sochi. Not only is he the president of the IIHF, Fasel also leads the AIOWF, the Association of International Olympic Winter Federations, the umbrella organization for the seven federations on the program for the Sochi games. Fasel was integral in making sure that NHL players will participate in the 2014 Olympics.
Next he may have a more daunting task to get the NHL to South Korea for the 2018 Games in PyeongChang. Then Fasel and the federation face the challenge of developing a competitive men’s and women’s team from South Korea to participate in the Olympics in front of a hometown crowd.
Fasel, whose 64th birthday falls the day before the Sochi opening ceremony, has a seat on the IOC executive board and has been a member in Switzerland since 1995.
