Madrid, 15 May 2009 - The Executive Committee of the European Olympic Committees (EOC) has declared its full support for Madrid’s bid to host the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Official support for the Spanish capital was announced after a meeting of the Executive Committee of the EOC in Dubrovnik this week. The Committee, of which Alejandro Blanco, President of the Spanish Olympic Committee is part of, unanimously approved a declaration of support for Madrid to become the Olympic host city in 2016.

As part of this, the Executive Committee – an important representation of the full EOC – calls for other members of the Assembly to come forward in support of the Madrid 2016 bid.

Following the successful visit of the Evaluation Commission of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to Madrid last week, Mercedes Coghen, chief of the Madrid 2016 bid said: “This declaration expresses the absolute support of the European Olympic Movement for Madrid to realise its Olympic aspirations. This is a very important group for Madrid and together we will work hard to bring the 2016 Games to Europe.”
