Cultural Olympiad Brings Best Modern Theatre Performances to Sochi

November 25, 2011, Sochi, Russia - The final of the "Tekstura-Olymp" theatre contest has begun in Sochi, aiming to discover and showcase the best modern theatrical productions reflecting recent trends in arts. The final program of the competition will culminate in a stunning dramatic performance produced by Ingeborga Dapkunaite - star of the Russian film Burnt by the Sun, which won the Grand Prize at the Cannes Film Festival-1994. A hip-hop festival The battle of two capitals - Sochi vs Krasnodar> will also be a part of the final program. The "Tekstura-Olymp" theatre contest will close the Sochi 2014 Cultural Olympiad's 'Year of Theatre', that's had more than 800 events across Russia with an audience of more than 1 million spectators.

A total of 120 applications from more than 60 Russian regions have been submitted to the contest's organizers. 6 performances were chosen by expert jury including Forbes Woman Chief Editor Irina Mikhailovskaya for final: "Babushki" (("Grannies") - "Practika" theatre, Moscow) - about life in Russian village; "Mefisto Vals" (("Mefisto waltz") - "Derevo" theatre, St.Petersburg); "Kaleka s Inishmana" (("Inishman Cripple") - "Teatr u mosta", Perm) - about life in Irish province; "Luna I Transformer" (("Moon and Transformer") - "Kolada" Theatre, Yekaterinburg) - about child's dreams and memories, and also a youth performance about policemen's life "Kopi v ogne" ("Cops on fire" - Le Cirque de Sharles la Tannes> theatre, Moscow) and a political detective Gagarin Way>, Volgogradsky youth theatre.

Dmitry Chernyshenko, President of Sochi 2014 Organizing Committee marked:

"Sochi 2014 Cultural Olympiad is aimed at retaining and increasing the unique cultural wealth of Russia, involve every citizen into a grandiose holiday and highlight "Russia-at-its-best" for guests of the 2014 Winter Olympics. The "Tekstura-Olymp" competition is a chance for young theatre groups to captivate their audiences and command the best stages of the world. I am sure that next year of the Cultural Olympiad - the Year of Music - will continue to entertain audiences and share the atmosphere of the Olympic holiday with the whole country!"

The three winning plays of the "Tekstura-Olymp" will be announced on December, 2, 2011 and will be shown during the Olympic Games in Sochi in 2014.
