The 4th Islamic Solidarity Games, which will be hosted in Baku from 12-22 May 2017, has unveiled a new logo and Games look at the press conference in Baku. The team of Azerbaijani designers created branding that combines sports iconography with the history, heritage and culture of Islamic countries.
The central theme for the new Baku 2017 brand revolves around a modern interpretation of carpet weaving, which is part of a rich cultural tradition inherent to many Muslim nations. It uses a bold colour palette that celebrates the craft, culture and centuries-old traditions of the Islamic world.
The elements within the carpet pattern are symbolic of Azerbaijan’s heritage and these have been elegantly interwoven with sports icons to pay homage to the historic petroglyphs found at Gobustan National Park — a UNESCO World Heritage site.
This is a modern depiction of Islamic culture and the sporting events being held at the Islamic Solidarity Games. The designs will be featured on tickets, uniforms and re-interpreted for merchandising and venues.
Mr. Azad Rahimov, Minister of Youth and Sports of Republic of Azerbaijan and CEO of AISGOC, said:
"We are delighted to unveil the new branding for the Baku 2017 4th Islamic Solidarity Games which is modern and reflects the rich cultural history of the Islamic nations of the world. Having a strong, recognisable brand can play a hugely significant role in successfully engaging the public."
The new branding has been used as part of a re-launch of the official Baku 2017 website, which has been updated and refreshed.
