(ATR) New York City will not bid for the 2024 Olympics.

Alicia Glen, the deputy mayor for housing and economic development, told the Wall Street Journal on Tuesday that Mayor Bill De Blasio ordered a study of the bid and determined a bid "doesn't make sense."

Glen added that Mayor De Blasio wanted to focus on his specific policies for the city and that the 2024 Olympics could be a distraction from his goals. The city, she added, is experiencing record tourism, and "our feeling is that you could actually deter tourism to some extent by hosting an Olympic Games."

The city, Glen said, would not rule out a 2028 Olympic bid if the U.S. Olympic Committee expressed interest in a bid.

There was no comment available from Jay Kriegel, a key official with New York City’s 2012 Olympic bid, or Dan Doctoroff, who originally floated a 2024 campaign and was the 2012 bid leader.

New York City has never hosted an Olympic Games.

A decision on a 2024 U.S. bid city is expected from the USOC this year. Seven other cities have expressed interest in bidding for the Games.

Bids are expected from multiple cities and countries, including Paris, Italy, and South Africa.

The IOC will select a 2024 Olympic host city at its 2017 Session.
