Minsk 2019 Flame Begins Journey

(ATR) The Flame of Peace lighting marks 50 days until the 2nd European Games in Minsk.

The lighting ceremony was held in Rome at the Ara Pacis, the world’s oldest temple.

EOC president Janez Kocijančič, Italian Olympic Committee President Giovanni Malago, and Sergey Kavalchuk, Minister of Sports and Tourism for Belarus, were among those who spoke at the ceremony.

Minsk 2019 organizing committee CEO George Katulin remarked during his speech how he hoped "The flame of peace will stop all the conflict in our continent."

Belarusian Olympic champions were also among those who attended the ceremony.

A group of Belarusian bikers will now accompany the torch on its trip from Rome to Minsk.

The motorcade will cross 55 locations in Austria, Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia.

The athletes from the Belarusian Climbing and Mountaineering Federation will bring the Flame of Peace to the top of Mont Blanc on May 5-7.

The motorcade is scheduled to reach the border of Belarus on May 11. The relay for the Flame of Peace will end at the Dinamo Stadium in Minsk with the lighting of the cauldron on June 21.
