CBC Unveils Sochi Plans

Canadians can watch the Sochi 2014 Olympics 24/7.

On Wednesday, the CBC unveiled its programming line-up for the 2013-14 broadcast season, with the Olympics set to play a leading role.

The broadcaster said viewers will see athlete-driven coverage, accessible on all platforms "whenever and wherever they want." Every second of competition will be streamed on a CBC platform as well.

"2013-14 is an exciting time for CBC, and we're proud to move into the new season with strong content that Canadians truly care about," said Neil McEneaney, interim executive vice-president, English Services, CBC. "As the official broadcaster of the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games, Hockey Night in Canada, and a line-up full of new and returning primetime programs, CBC is the home of the hits this season."

Pistorius, Semenya off SASCOC Funding; 2016 Medal Target

Two of South Africa’s most well-known athletes won’t be funded by SASCOC, the country’s Olympic committee, this year.

Caster Semenya and Oscar Pistorius will not receive funds, SASCOC announced on Wednesday, because it is unclear if they will compete in the 2013 athletics season.

Pistorius is awaiting trial over the Valentine’s Day shooting of his girlfriend, and Semenya missed the South African Athletics Championship.

"There is no point spending money on athletes that are not training," SASCOC CEO Tubby Reddy told the AP.

Unveiling the $7.4 million Operation Excellence funding scheme, Gideon Sam, president of SASCOC said South Africa is targeting 16 medals in Rio de Janeiro.

"If Africa is going for 50, this will be our contribution," Sam said.

"My focus is this and I must take these athletes and support them and make sure that they qualify for Rio. This country wants performers, so we will go out of our way."

Tokyo 2020 Partners with 77 Universities

Tokyo 2020 signed partnership agreements with 77 additional universities to advance studies in sport development.

In all, 82 universities will partner with Tokyo 2020 to study the best practices in sport development and benefits associated with potentially hosting Olympic and Paralympic Games in Japan’s capital.

"I had the fortune of taking part in the Olympic Games, which is every athlete’s dream," Keiji Suzuki, Athens 2004 Games judo gold medalist and lecturer at Kokushikan University said.

"My next dream is for my students and the younger generation to experience the Olympic Games and the power of sport first-hand."
