El estado de emergencia fue declarado el miércoles 15 de mayo y regirá hasta el 27 del mismo mes. Los disturbios, verificados principalmente en la quema de autos y edificios, saqueos y enfrentamientos, suscitaron el despliegue del ejército y la presencia de 2.700 agentes policiales y configuran un clima radicalmente opuesto a aquel de paz y unión promovido por relevo de la antorcha olímpica.

Estaba previsto que el la llama olímpica recalara en Nueva Caledonia el lunes 11 de junio para emprender un recorrido con tramos en bicicleta, en canoa y a caballo, en la búsqueda de reflejar tradiciones propias. De todos modos, la “Francia de los tres océanos” estará bien representada en el periplo. Entre el 8 y el 17 de junio, el fuego desembarcará en Guyana, Guadalupe, Martinica, La Reunión y la Polinesia Francesa, la sede del surf.
